What’s an Email Service Provider (ESP)

An Email Service Provider (ESP) is a company that offers email services to users. These services can be as simple as sending and receiving emails to more complex features like email design, automation, and analytics. The main function of an ESP is to be the middleman between the sender and the recipient, to make sure emails get delivered properly and efficiently.

Businesses use ESPs for their email marketing campaigns. They provide the tools and infrastructure to send mass emails to customers, track performance, and optimize future campaigns based on that data.

Types of ESPs

There are several types of ESPs, each offering different services and for different needs. Some ESPs just offer basic email services like sending and receiving email. These are often used by individuals or small businesses with simple email needs.

Others offer more advanced features like email design, automation, and analytics. These are used by larger businesses with more complex email marketing needs. They provide the tools and data to create, send, and optimize large-scale email campaigns.

How ESPs Work

ESPs work by being the middleman between the sender and the recipient. When a user sends an email, it goes to the ESP’s servers first. The ESP then processes the email and sends it to the recipient’s email server. The recipient’s email server then delivers the email to the recipient’s inbox.

This ensures emails get delivered properly and efficiently. It also allows the ESP to track email performance and provide data to the sender.

“We looked at 16 different agencies, interviewed 8 of them and selected InboxArmy as number 1 pick.”

We hired InboxArmy to redesign Salesforce Marketing Cloud emails. The goal was to create a new master template that matched branding using industry best practices. After we signed the SOW, we had a couple discovery calls, submitted our brief and branding document. Once we were on the same page, InboxArmy did design in batches, we had 3 rounds of reviews and once all was finalized IA coded and implemented the templates for us in MC.

During discovery calls, members of IA were present (covering design and coding). After that we always communicated with our representative, Charlie. Being able to understand branding and our needs, design capabilities, coding pace, responsiveness and always willing to go step beyond for this project.

Felt like IA and we were on the same team.
